God's Short Memory

Have we, "rejoiced with indescribable and glorious joy?" When St. Peter says this in today's 2nd reading, he meant it! The disciples were imperishable, undefiled and unfaded. Why? They realized that through the wounds of Christ they have been healed! They came to faith, they came to believe! Even St. Thomas came to believe and not only believe in the resurrection but to believe that they were forgiven! Our memories run long and deep, but Christ's memory of our sin is short--if we ask for forgiveness. He returns to the disciples in his resurrected body and says, "Peace be with you." He does not lay into them for what they did or failed to do. Jesus goes on to say, "Who's sins you forgive, they will be forgiven, whose sins you retain, they will be retained." Jesus hands on this short memory through the comissioning of the sacrament of confession. We need not hang onto our woundedness. We need not hold our clenched fist against the grace of God. We not point fingers at others and make excuses for our own misdeeds and sins. We must open our hands and place them in the side of Christ. We must point our finger and place in the wound of His hands. We musn't hold onto these memories that haunt us. We musn't be trapped in rooms of fear. Jesus busts through the doors and offers us peace. Will we accept it? Will we believe that we are forgiven? Will we trust in His mercy?
